Hyundai will offer remote start from Google Glass (Google’s computer eyeglasses) starting with the 2015 Genesis.
It’s Blue Link infotainment system will connect to many wearable devices including Google Glass and will also control remote door lock/unlock, vehicle finder, and the ability to send info on points of interest to the car.
With wearable devices like Google Glass there’s no need to pull out a smartphone to control car functions, said Hyundai Thursday. So the car maker will submit a Blue Link Glassware application next year when it launches the new Genesis sedan.
“Wearables are a great way to extend the experience outside of the vehicle by leveraging these small screens to quickly access remote features and deliver timely vehicle information,” said Hyundai exec Barry Ratzlaff.
On Google Glass, car information will be presented as “cards” that are suited to its user interface. The driver will get notices when maintenance is due and the app will help him schedule an appointment, as well as offering the ability to control car functions like remote start.
“In 2013, we saw millions of commands sent to Hyundai vehicles from our Blue Link mobile application,” said Ratzlaff. “As new screens emerge, we see a real opportunity to expand our app strategy to provide added convenience for our owners.”
Google Glass, with its built-in computer, are glasses that turn your field of vision into a computer screen. You control the glasses by voice or by tapping on the frames. It acts much as a heads up display—showing you apps.
Google Glass is in test mode with thousands of testers (Glass Explorers) currently using them, many of whom paid $1,500 for the privilege. Google announced this fall it will widen the Explorer program, allowing 3 friends of each original Explorer to test the glasses.
In August, traffic company INRIX showed how Google Glass might work in the car.
