Pioneer announced last week it will ship in June a new car navigation system in Japan that displays real time photos of traffic.

The car radio screen can display live photos of more than 5,000 intersections, and other locations in Japan including parking lots.

The system is based on “crowd-sourced” photos of traffic. Owners of the new Pioneer navigation system are constantly, automatically uploading traffic images into the system as they drive (the Pioneer navigation radio includes a camera).

Pioneer expects to sell 200,000 of the new navigation radios in the first year.  It will come in 7 models ranging in price from the US dollar equivalent of about $1,470 to $3,330.
