Volkswagen will release two car models next year that include an iPhone 5 docking station front and center on top of the dashboard.
VW says the cars are among the first in the world “to have a genuine integrative interface for the iPhone that was coordinated with Apple.”
The iPhone snaps into the cradle so the phone sends navigation, hands free calling, music and other iPhone features through the car’s sound system.
It works with an iBeetle app (whether docked or not). The app gives you a menu of functions including Facebook and other social media message listings, and Spotify for media streaming and online music stations A feature called “Expert” offers a G-Meter to measure transverse acceleration, and oil and coolant temperature gauges for the engine, a chronometer and a compass.
The special model will be available as a Coupé and Cabriolet called iBeetle and iBeetle Cabriolet, Advance sales on the cars begin October 2013 and delivery is expected early in 2014.
Some other features of the iPhone system include:
Trainer–can be used to compare driving times, distances and fuel economy values for different routes between any two destinations.
Postcard–response to a touchscreen command, the app sends the current location of the Beetle to friends as a “digital postcard.”
Also, a photo can be taken from the interior of the Beetle by iPhone camera and sent to social networks with the “Photo” function.
