New BMWs to Take Dictation: 6 Series

BMW’s 6-series models are getting a dictation function that lets drivers compose text and email messages freely.  Within a few seconds, the car transcribes the text so it appears in the car’s display. And it can be read aloud to the driver.  Then the driver can make edits by voice.

Another function is voice memos that you can send off by email.  So you may quickly note your brilliant ideas as you drive down the road or compose to-do lists and send them to the relevant address.  Or you can store them on a USB drive.

The features are part of a new navigation system with an iDrive4.2 display, which is easier to use, claims the car maker.  The navi system gives you more levels of voice control for anything from adjusting the radio by voice to entering destinations or changing route information.  It has more 3D and uses a fast 1.3GHz processor with a dedicated 3D graphics card.

Navi maps are now sharper and show more information.

The car maker also now permits simultaneous pairing of two phones for the 6-series, so both phones get hands free calls and emails.  Also, the calendar and contact info on both phones is quickly displayed on the car screen.

BMW also announced a new 6 Series Convertible Frozen Brilliant White Edition for model year 2014 to be produced in April and May starting at $106,695.  It will be the first BMW to use a virtual instrument cluster based on LCD screens that change displays in different driving modes.
