If you shop online, your bill may get a bit higher.

AmazonThe U.S. Senate may vote on a bill to lets States impose a tax on goods purchased online by the end of the month.

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) filed an amendment to tack the bill onto the National Defense Authorization Act for 2013, reports The Washington Times.

The Senator is working to get a vote on the online sales tax bill– the Marketplace Fairness Act– either as a standalone bill or as an amendment to another bill.    The House is working on a similar bill.

Political will seems to have shifted in favor of taxing online sales on the part of both political parties, said the Washington Times.  States see it as a way to increase revenue, as the bill would allow states to require that online retailers charge sales tax, just as brick and mortar retailers do.

An online sales tax could generate about $23 billion in revenue, according to studies.
