OnStar is running a pilot program for new teen tracking and vehicle location services.
The pilot service is called Family Link. It lets subscribers log onto a web site to view a map that shows the family car’s exact location. Users may also elect to get email or text updates on the location of a kid’s or spouse’s vehicle.
OnStar may also offer speed alerts, boundary alerts and arrival/departure alerts.
“Our subscribers have asked us for a solution to help them stay connected to their family when they’re on the road. What parent hasn’t asked their teenaged driver to call or send a text when they arrive somewhere, only to not hear from them?” said OnStar’s new president Linda Marshall. “
Participation in the OnStar Family Link pilot is by invitation only and will include approximately 10,000 current OnStar subscribers.
Separately, Hughes Telematics announced an OnStar-like system with teen tracking in a new Pay As You Drive insurance program with State Farm.
