Total CE to Grow by 5.6% in 2011

Consumer electronics  shipments will grow at a faster clip than expected buoyed by sales of smartphones, tablets, and ereaders, even as TV shipments decline.

smartphones are driving consumer electronics growth in 2011U.S. shipment sales for all CE products will climb by 5.6 percent this year, passing $190 billion and then sliding upward in 2012 to an all-time high of $197 billion, said the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

TV sales will decline, as 88 percent of homes own at least one digital TV. But 3DTV is actually growing a bit faster than expected and should reach shipments of 3.6 million units in 2011, up from a projected 1.9 million in January. Total digital display U.S. revenues should top $18 billion.

It’s the smartphone that is really driving growth in consumer electronics this year. Unit shipments should climb by 45 percent to reach more than $23 billion in revenue. Tablet sales should grow by 157 percent on shipments of 26.5 million units, producing $14 billion in shipment revenues.

eReader unit sales will double this year, with more than 16.5 million units being shipped, resulting in $1.8 billion in revenue, said the CEA.
