Best Buy said consumers may delay holiday purchases until the last minute.

CEO Brian Dunn told Reuters that the slow economy may mean that Christmas comes late this year.

On the other hand strong sales are expected in eReaders, smartphones, tablet PCs like the iPad and gaming products including the Microsoft Kinect and Sony’s Move, he said.

To woo shoppers both Best Buy and Walmart are offering free shipping this year.

The National Retail Federation, a trade group, forecasts a healthy 2.3 percent increase in sales in November and December, compared with a 0.4 percent increase in 2009 and the 3.9 percent decline in 2008.
