GM Radios Unlocked for iPod Out, Video

Coastal Electronic Technologies is offering a car module that can unlock a General Motors’ radio screen to work with both audio and video from an iPhone, iPad, iPod and many other devices.

It can also use Apple’s new iPod Out feature to exactly replicate the iPod or iPhone screen on the GM screen.

The module, called the Lockpick GMX550 also unlocks the GM screen for video and navigation as in past models, but it provides additional AV inputs for back up cameras or other cameras.

Coastal says every function is controllable using the existing steering wheel controls and the menu buttons on the radio screen.

For Apple products without iPod Out, you still get music and video playback.

You can create a network of cameras around the vehicle that work off the GM screen including a rear vision back up camera or side cameras that activate when you turn on your signal light.

You can also add aftermarket hands free kits to the module’s plug and play harness. The GMX5500 also has a USB port and it has AV outputs to connect to additional screens. It ships this week at $349.
