Dish subscribers will be able to get live satellite TV on their iPads, iPhones, iPod touch, and BlackBerry devices in September, with Android devices to follow in October, said the AP.
Though the service will carry no additional subscription fees, some additional hardware will be needed such as a SlingBox ($180 to $300). If you want a digital video recorder (DVR) option, you must pay $200 to $400 plus a $10 per month service fee.
Dish already makes apps for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch for remote control over Dish functions but this will be the first time it offers free live streaming to these and other mobile devices.
Dish may have an advantage in permitting live streaming because Sling Media, maker of the SlingBox, is owned by EchoStar whose chairman, Charlie Ergen, is also Dish CEO.
Verizon’s FiOS pay TV service may also be planning to stream to a Motorola-made tablet.
