Sales of the iPad have now topped 2 million units in less than 60 days, Apple announced.

Most of those sales have occurred in the U.S. since the device launched April 3, although Apple started shipping the iconic device overseas this past weekend to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. Apple’s biggest challenge is building enough of the devices which will soon be available in nine more countries in July and additional countries later this year. Apple CEO Steve Jobs, said he ‘appreciates the patience’ of overseas customers waiting for the iPad and said Apple is “working hard to build enough iPads for everyone,” in a statement.

The latest app tally for the iPad is 5,000 although the device also runs almost all of the iPhone/iPod touch apps numbering 200,000 on the App Store.
