Best Buy is launching a new on-demand movie service that gives customers access to movies the day they become available.
Beginning this month, the service will be offered on all new connected Blu-ray Disc players and home theater systems from LG Electronics and it should be available on other devices from other suppliers including Best Buy’s Insignia house brand later this year, said Best Buy.
The retail giant has partnered with CinemaNow and Sonic Solutions to offer the service, which is powered by RoxioNow. (Best Buy owns the legal rights to the CinemaNow trademark). In addition to first run movies, a large library of movies and TV shows will be available from which consumers can rent or buy titles without a subscription. The service will have a “straightforward user interface” for searching through content. An improved version of the service will debut later in the year, offering more video playback and an advanced user interface, said Best Buy.
“The convenience, selection and flexibility of the CinemaNow service offers customers more freedom in the way they choose to consume entertainment from Best Buy. This service… will be available to customers in their homes and on-the-go through a broad array of devices and will be brought to life in store with the help of our Blue Shirts and Geek Squad Agents,” said Best Buy senior VP entertainment Chris Homeister.
