PlayStation Warranties Could Irk Retailers

Sony’s announcement Monday that it will offer extended warranties on its PlayStation gaming machines could take away a profit source for retailers.
“Video game hardware isn’t a big money maker for retailers dealing with razor-thin margins, which is why gamers are often subjected to lengthy pitches for profit-padding protection plans when they buy their systems. Sony is taking the wind out of the sails of big-box retailers by offering its own optional hardware warranty,” concluded ars technica.
Sony’s new PlayStation Protection Plan will begin this month. It kicks in after the original product warranty expires with a one or two year extension. PSP owners can also get an Accidental Damage Plan that covers a cracked screen if the PSP is dropped.
The pricing below includes shipping charges and repairs:
• PS3 – 1-year extension ($49.99) or 2-year extension ($59.99)
• PSP – 1-year extension ($29.99) or 2-year extension ($39.99)
• PSP with Accidental Damage – 1-year extension ($39.99) or 2-year extension ($49.99)
You can buy the extended warranty now from Sony if you own a PS3 and PSP and are still under the original one year warranty. The Accidental Damage Plan must be purchased within 30 days of owning a PSP.
