Apple fans will likely hit the keyboard en masse March 12 to pre-order an iPad tablet as Apple announced today its iPad will go on sale starting April 3 with pre-orders beginning March 12.
Pre-orders will be taken online at www.apple.com for both WiFi and 3G models or through Apple retail stores for the WiFi-only models.
WiFi versions of the iPad will go on sale on April 3 and 3G models will be available in late April, Apple said.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement, “iPad is something completely new. We’re excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”
Thinner and lighter than a laptop at 1.5 pounds, the iPad tablet lets users browse the web, read and send email, view and share photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games, and read ebooks via a multi-touch interface. It claims a battery life of up to 10 hours.
The iPad starts at $499 suggested retail price for a WiFi-only 16GB model. A step up 32GB WiFi model has an SRP of $599 and a 64GB model has an SRP of $699. The Wi-Fi + 3G models start at $629 for a 16GB version, and step up to $729 for a 32GB version and $829 for 64GB iPad.
