Media Tablets Like iPad to hit 57M by 2015
Media tablets like the Apple iPad are expected to see shipments of about four million units this year and will grow to shipments of 57 million units annually in five years, according to ABI Research.
Unlike traditional tablet PCs, media tablets focus on entertainment. They are luxury products designed for media consumption. A media tablet also has a touch-screen interface that’s 5-11 inches in size, with Wi-Fi Internet connectivity and video and gaming capabilities, says ABI.
Other players in media tablets, according to recent International CES entries include Lenovo, HP and Asus, said ABI.
For its part Acer says it’s not about to enter the media tablet market, and specifically has no plans to compete with the iPad this year, reported Taiwanese based newsletter DigiTimes.
Instead Acer will focus on producing ultra thin notebooks. Acer’s Taiwan president Scott Lin said the key to an iPad-type product is the iTunes-type store behind it and Acer does not have experience comparable to Apple in running an e-store.
