Harman International announced it has acquired iOnRoad Technologies, maker of an augmented reality driving app that provides crash warning nd driver safety functions using one’s smartphone.

iOnRoad is a driving safety app that uses the smartphone’s native camera and sensors to warn drivers of a potential collision.  It can detect your lane and the cars  in front of your vehicle, so it alerts the driver in time to take action when it detects danger.

It also claims to improve your driving in  real-time using augmented reality feedback of your driving to encourage safe driving habits.

iOnRoad recently won a 2013 Qualcomm technology competition for the app that works with Android, iPhone, Windows and Linux platforms.

Harman says the purchase of the Israel-based company will help it bring driver safety functions to market more rapidly. It plans to include iOnRoad algorithms in its automotive heads up displays, but iOnRoad will also continue to be sold as a standalone app.

“As our cars become more connected to the world around us, advanced safety solutions are critical to drivers,” says Dinesh Paliwal, Harman Chairman, President and CEO. “Harman’s next generation in-vehicle infotainment technology platforms are designed to be smarter and have more responsive control systems, particularly in an advanced head-up display. iOnRoad provides an exceedingly exciting opportunity for us to leverage our installed base of more than 15 million vehicles and provide technology systems and services to more customers.”
