For 12 volters, Apple said that it will supply an adaptor for the new connector so the phone will work with existing products and it showed a photo of a car radio, specifically. The new dock is called  “Lightning.”

It’s 80 percent smaller than the current dock.  Apple calls it “smaller, smarter and more durable than the previous connector.”  It is all-digital and uses only the signals that each accessory requires, it said.

Lightning is also reversible.

Additionally, Apple showed a new thinner iPod touch that now works with Siri, and a new iPod nano that now resembles a mini iPhone with a 2.5 inch diagonal screen and a home button.

The new iPhone 5 will provide Face Time over cellular networks (instead of WiFi only, as in earlier models).

The 8MP camera now works in lower lighting and has a Panorama mode for sweeping photos .  Battery life is 8 hours of LTE or 3G browsing or 10 hours on WiFi.

The processor speed and graphics on the iPhone 5 are each twice as fast as older models.  Apple says the phone is the slimmest on the market and 18 percent thinner than the 4S.  It called it “an absolute jewel.  The most beautiful product we have ever made,” according to Engadget’s live blog of the unveiling Wednesday.

The phone, available in black or white, will go on pre-sale this Friday the 14th with shipping starting September 21 at prices of $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB. The iPhone 4 is now free on contract and the 4S is priced at $99.

Some other features: voice updates to Facebook,  the front facing camera is now 720p and the audio has been upgraded.

The iPhone 5 embeds 3 mics for better voice recognition and noise cancellation.  The speaker now gets a 5-magnet transducer and the phone reproduces a wider audio spectrum.

Apple will also release a new, simpler iTunes to launch September 19 along with the release of iOS 6.

As for the new iPods, the iPod touch is 2X faster than the 4th gen model and has dual-core graphics, plus a 5MP camera with the same new Panorama feature as the iPhone. It provides 1080p video now with image stabilization and it has a 720p front facing camera.

The nano now gets Bluetooth, widescreen video and an FM tuner with live pause.  There’s a fitness pedometer built in and it has the new smaller Lightning connector.

The iPod shuffle also gets new colors.

Apple even updated the earbuds, now called EarPod, for its devices. It’s shipped over 600 million of its iconic white headphones which are now shaped to better suit the ear canal.
