General Motors’ OnStar is improving its voice recognition by adding natural speech recognition in 2011 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac models.
Users can now give conversational commands like, “I need to make a phone call,” instead of going through a prompt and using formal commands like, “dial” or “call.”
Users can also connect to an OnStar Virtual Advisor through natural phrases including, “get traffic info,” to receive text-to-speech directions.
Nuance Communications is providing the new speech software. It’s also collaborating with OnStar to develop uNav, a new self-service feature that allows subscribers to quickly receive directions to a destination using an automated voice system after pressing the blue OnStar button.
