New HUD Has Blind Spot Detection

A new heads up display (HUD) from Spade Tech may be the first to offer blind spot detection.

The device is making an appearance on Kickerstarter so it’s not exactly on the market, but it is the most feature-packed we’ve seen.

Called iScout,  it comes with detachable cameras on either side of the unit (on the Premium iScout).

The cameras link to the turn signals and give you a view of the lane you are about to cross into.

The Spade Tech CEO, who goes by the single name Noufal, told us, you can keep the cameras attached to the HUD or you can remove them for placement on the sides of the car.   “In our experience [the HUD] is a convenient position for most cars as it simulates the viewing angle when a driver looks over his shoulder to look at his blind spots. However, we are also providing an option to dismount the blind spot cameras,” said Noufal.

The cameras connect to the HUD over WiFi, but if you disconnect them then they must be hard-wired to the car battery. So, in this case, professional installation may be warranted.  The company also provides mounting brackets for the cameras.

iScout also doubles as a  dash cam and it links to your phone over Bluetooth to show incoming calls as well as your messages from services like WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and more.

You can swipe your hand in the air to the left to accept a call and swipe to the right to reject a call.

You also get GPS navigation.

As with all HUDs, data is projected onto the windshield so it’s in easy view of the driver.  iScout’s screen is always visible, even in sunlight, says the company.  And if you are running low on gas, it alerts you and directs you to the nearest gas station.

The product is available at $299 (or $269 without the blind spot feature) on a Kickerstarter promotion.
