A Free DashCam To Collect Your Data

That’s what Android Founder Andy Rubin is working on. Rubin plans to give away a dashcam to drivers in exchange for collecting their data. This would allow Rubin’s new company, called Playground, to build a real time visual map of the globe, reports Wired.

The dashcam is the first part of plans by Rubin and Playground to create the building blocks for companies to create new artificial intelligence (AI) products, much like Android provided the basis to create iPhones and tablets. And it turns out the humble dashcam may be the start of this ambitious project.

Wired quoted tech savvy David Wallerstein of Tencent as stating that Playground’s ideas are revolutionary. “Within three to five years, it’s impossible that Playground won’t release something that’ll just blow our minds.”

No more details were offered on dashcams, so we’ll have to wait and see.  You can read the full Wired story here.

  1. This will be a perfect storm for both individually targeted advertising to a very captive audience with a tracking app for the insurance carriers to monitor all aspects of driving habits. Big Brother is here to stay and you will not be permitted to opt out of the service or gathering of data from your sources. There won’t be any driving off the grid allowed and we are just now seeing the implications/ramifications disguised as a “beneficial service”.
