Aftermarket Blindspot Camera System for GM Due Q4

A camera-based blindspot detector that works with most General Motors vehicles is due from iCar-Link in the next 60-90 days.

The detector uses a single interface and comes with different sets of cameras for specific GM car models including various GM and Chevy trucks, cars and SUVs and crossovers as well as vehicles from Cadillac and Buick.

The system mounts in a “near plug and play” fashion and ties into the car radio screen and the CAN bus.  It is designed to show a visual image on the camera screen when you are ready to change lanes.  The left or right turn signal triggers the camera.

iCar-Link’s Bob Morgan believes no other aftermarket company is offering a camera-based, vehicle-specific blind spot detector to date.

No pricing was available.

Morgan said, “Blind spot detectors are a big growth category; it’s a question of developing, more sophisticated products, and ones that integrate more into the vehicle.”

  1. Many of these driver assist and safety add-ons will be mandated by the state, feds or both in the coming future. Dealers would be wise to study them closely, and manufacturers would be wise to either build them, buy a company that builds them or integrate them into your existing lineup. It is one of the many new categories that will shape the next five years.
