VOXX is now shipping the OMEGA-CARLINK-3G, replacing its earlier 2G device, as 2G cell towers are phased out.
The CARLINK lets users remote start and stop their car from a smartphone anywhere there is service, as well as track the car, lock and unlock doors, and perform other functions.
Where previously, the system worked over a 2G wireless connection, it is now replaced at a 3G version for less than a premium of $20. OMEGA said it is absorbing most of the upgrade costs as 3G hardware is more expensive than 2G.
“With the announcements that 2G towers will be completely sun-downed by 2017, it was a priority to be proactive and develop a 3G direct replacement,” said a press release. “All connectors and wiring are identical in the 3G unit to the now discontinued 2G versions, so installation & activation are the same. The only difference between the two units is the built-in 3G cell radio. As a by-product, users may notice faster response times, as GPRS service is much faster than Edge.”
