Soundman Car Audio of Valencia, CA is hand building a bleeding edge in-car kit that is now available to other car audio dealers.
An iPad mini “float mount pan” is a quick release “pan” for installing the tablet in a dashboard. It lets you pop in the iPad mini which is then held in place with a magnetic mount. There’s a curve in the pan so if you press on the iPad, it releases from the mount.
The pan is made of fiberglass and designed for installers rather than consumers, as it still requires some grinding, sanding and painting. The installer attaches the pan to the dash with “CA glue and then uses body filler to shape the panel,” said Soundman’s Doug Bernards.
It can be used with a slider kit for a full dash kit as shown in the video below
The mounting pan for the iPad mini has a retail price of $209.99. The slider kit has a retail price of $149.99.
Soundman also built its first car-specific iPad mounting pan for the Honda Accord (2008 and up) at $229.
