Garmin announced a new way to receive turn-by-turn directions. Now, in addition to telling drivers to turn at a certain road, it will also tell them to “turn right at the Starbucks” when applicable.
Another new feature is a traffic “progress bar” that shows you if congestion is clearing up farther down the road, so drivers may better decide whether to switch routes.
Both features are found on the new Prestige and Advanced lines. The first Prestige model is a super slim tablet-like 5 inch device with a capacitive screen (similar to multi-touch tablets). It also has a new snap on magnetic mount, and new voice activation. Called the nüvi 3597 LMTHD, it ships in Q1 at $379.99.
Garmin also reorganized its PNDs into three series. There’s a new basic series called the “Essential” line that starts at $120, plus a mid-level Advanced series that starts at $199 and the Prestige series, currently with the single $379 model noted above.
