Aftermarket Mirror Gets Smartphone-Like Screen

A new rear view replacement  mirror from Intraphex  offers a built-in 4.3 inch capacitive touch screen—the kind used in smartphones offering responsive touch control.

Intraphex mirrorThe mirror serves as a back up camera and navigation device with voice input of destinations.  Popular Mechanics, which gave the mirror an Editors’ Choice Award for SEMA 2012, said the voice input was  “some of the best voice recognition we’ve ever tried.”

It also offers Google search for points of interest using your smartphone’s WiFi hotspot (or any portable WiFi hotspot) as a connection to the Internet. There’s an auto dimming feature and the mirror uses automotive grade glass.

The universal device goes into sleep mode when it’s not navigating but you can “wake it up” with a swipe.

Called the the TD-CTMD43 it has a price tag of $899.
