How Loud is Loud?

share on:

Well since you ask, here’s some perspective to just how loud a competition-winning 170-180 db sound system is.

Note, we are not recommending you try to achieve these noise levels at home, and we personally seek out sound quality in our own car audio systems, we’re just sayin….

40dB–human whisper
116dB–human perceives low frequency vibrations
Pioneer van130dB –the threshold of pain to humans
141dB—humans begin to feel nausea after a few minutes
142dB—a car cabin with 2 pro 18-inch woofers pushing 300 watts each
145dB—a competition car stereo system with sixteen 12- inch subwoofers
150dB—rock concerts
156dB—mini van with twenty 12” woofers and 19,000 watts of amp power
164dB—internal sound pressure of a jet airplane turbine
180dB—world’s loudest car stereo competition cars?
191dB—a small bomb
194.09dB—sound waves distort and now defined as shock waves

  1. 150.0 db can easily be achieved these days with only a 15 with around 1500 watts.. I fully agree that Sound Quality is the future.

  2. im not sure i believe the 150db rock concert… thats bullshit…150 db in a gigantic audtorium? maybe 12″ from the sound wall

  3. Big bass has always been cool. And an easy sell because bass is easily defined. SPL vehicles have their place, but until we begin to embrace sound QUALITY as our future, car audio will remain an endangered species. SPL’ers come and go. But people who appreciate GREAT sound never go away. Can we have more conversation about that??
